Add Ideas!
Strictly use computers for class work and email ALL assingments to your teacher
Adjust the air/heat Local control over this would be great!
Turn out the lights
Adjust purchasing by usage ie online database subscriptions
Students/Teachers pitch in to landscape, clean, plant, mow, paint, maintain This is a great idea and I believe it would be a meaningful lesson for students as well. This could teach respect, responsibility, team work, and civil duty to our students-all important to our youth! However, there is the issue with the unions, who would more than likely not support this. We're down 30+ custodians this school year - may not have a choice. Grow gardens of vegetables to use in cafeteria or sell at Farmer's Market-Again, a great lesson
Eliminate Kaplan
Eliminate FCAT - implement once per year online nationally normed test with instant results in MAY
Eliminate NCLB race profiling and implement economic profiling to determine schools with needs and FUND THEM!
Put in stationary bikes that generate electricity in gym classes
Solar panels to heat hot water/generate electricity in schools
Put off textbook adoption - purchase online textbooks and use laptops/mobile devices Currently we can not use textbook funds to purchase anything other than bound paper books! Score one for the textbook lobbyists.
Purchase ebooks and download to ipods/mp3 mobile devices I have to disagree with this one. There is something to be said for interacting with text and having a book in your hands. Students need to learn to read from various texts, not just online materials. There is also the question of what to do for students and families who do no have this technology, and teaching teachers and students how to use it.Gradual movement to ebooks certainly can't happen overnight - already not buying/replacing any hard issue AV as we've moved to streaming and digital av files. Also not buying hard cover periodicals for research as they are available online with EBSCO subscription. Give school board local control
Eliminate unfunded state mandates
Open smaller neighborhood schools on existing properties and eliminate busing - especially 14 miles to OKES from Hammock
Old building on A1A could be renovated as K-8 or K-6 for local walkers/bikers
Get rid of five year DROP program- this retirement program was put in place because there was a teacher shortage; it isn't needed anymore. Other counties allow teachers one year in DROP then they are forced to retire.
Turn off televisions- I've been in Buddy Taylor classrooms where the televisions are left on all night; televisions aren't needed to tell time. There are other less expensive ways to tell time.
